Walk-In Tubs for Veterans: VA Benefits That Pay for Your Bathroom Upgrade

If you’re a veteran in North Texas and your bathroom is a safety concern, funding is available — and most veterans don’t know it exists.

The HISA Grant

The VA’s Home Improvement and Structural Alterations (HISA) grant covers medically necessary bathroom modifications.

• Service-connected disabilities: Up to $6,800 lifetime
• Non-service-connected: Up to $2,000 lifetime

Covered modifications: Roll-in showers, walk-in tub installation, grab bars, non-slip flooring, threshold modifications.

How to Apply

1. Contact your VA medical center social worker
2. Get a medical recommendation from your VA provider documenting medical necessity
3. Get a licensed contractor quote (we provide VA-formatted written quotes)
4. Submit the HISA application — your social worker can help
